A prenatal visit allows expectant parents to meet our providers, tour our office, and ask questions about the birth and care of their baby. After your visit, we hope you will feel confident in our providers and staff and comfortable in our office.
Please note that in-office prenatal visits are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. However, we offer telemedicine appointments for prenatal visits Monday through Friday. Call 240-585-7128 to schedule your virtual visit!
A patient might be referred to a pediatric cardiologist for various reasons, including:
Visiting a cardiologist can be stressful for families. At PM Kidz Healthy Heart Center, we strive to ensure you and your family feel confident, safe, and comfortable throughout your visit.
Here’s what to expect during your visit:
Arrival and Check-In:
Upon arrival, our friendly staff will greet you at PM Kidz. Please check in at the front desk. Our waiting room is designed with children in mind, featuring a children's movie playing to help them feel comfortable. Older children or teens may prefer to bring their phones or tablets for games and shows.
Vital Signs and Initial Assessment:
When it's your child's turn, a staff member will bring you from the waiting room. We'll measure your child's weight, height, blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and use a pulse oximeter to check oxygen levels in their blood. This device lightly clamps to your child's finger and is painless.
Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG):
Some children may need an electrocardiogram to check their heart rhythm. Your child will lie on an exam table while we place special stickers on their chest, arms, and legs. Wires are then connected to these stickers to capture the heart's rhythm. This test is quick and painless.
Echocardiogram (ECHO):
For some visits, an echocardiogram may be performed to assess the structure and function of your child's heart. Your child will lie on an exam table while the doctor uses a machine connected to a wand. Clear gel is applied to the skin around the heart, and the wand acts like a camera to produce images of the heart and lungs. This test is also painless.
Checkout:
After the visit, the cardiologist will review and discuss your child's test results with you. A visit summary will be sent to your child's primary physician for continuity of care, and if necessary, the doctor will schedule a follow-up visit.
